The second annual My Tejano Awards will showcase the past, present and future of Tejano music at the Mission Event Center in Mission, Texas on Sunday, May 19.
The show, presented by the Tejano Music Hall of Fame Awards, will feature appearances and performers from over 200 bands and recognize the best of South Texas, including the legendary Freddie Martinez, Jay Perez, Lucky Joe, Stevie D, Monica Saldivar and more.
“Here in the Valley we have a lot of talent; it’s just not recognized,” M&E Productions co-owner Estela Flores told Progress Times. “We’re hoping to change that.”
Awards will be given in 14 categories including Album of the Year, Male and Female Vocalists, Top Collaboration, Top Video, Gone But Not Forgotten, Lifetime Achievement and more.
“This is something for the artist here in the Valley,” Flores added. “No one gets recognized in the Valley even though a lot of Tejano music started here and evolved here. San Antonio has their own Tejano music awards, but we needed to recognize Tejano music here.”
My Tejano Awards will feature tributes for two late Tejano legends, one for Laura Canales by Isabel Marie Sanchez, and another for Jimmy Gonzalez by Cristina Salinas and Jose Angel.
The event will take place at the Mission Event Center, located at 200 N. Shary Road in Mission, Texas. General admission tickets are priced at $20 with reserved tickets for $25 and VIP tickets priced at $35. The red carpet ceremony begins at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m. For more info call Estela at 956-227-5968.
